Cairo: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday highlighted potential obstacles in the US-Iran negotiations, cautioning that unresolved technical issues in the recently signed memorandum of understanding may not be easily addressed. Fidan also warned that Israel could disrupt the process.

According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan expressed these concerns during his visit to Cairo for the Fourth Consultative Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Trkiye, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. He emphasized the complexity of the technical details involved and the constant threat posed by Israel to the negotiation process.

Fidan engaged in separate discussions with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohi El-Din Salim on the sidelines of the meeting. Diplomatic sources indicated that he also met with Massad Boulos, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, regarding Arab and African affairs.

Fidan described his diplomatic engagements in Cairo as intensive, noting a significant meeting on Libya involving Trkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the US. The discussions also covered developments in the Mediterranean and Africa, leading to a productive exchange of views and common ground on several issues.

During his meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Fidan conveyed greetings from Trkiye's president and discussed the positive outcomes of the four-country consultation format. He emphasized that Trkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan are working collaboratively to address political, security, and economic challenges in the region.

The Turkish Foreign Minister stressed the importance of regional powers taking ownership of their challenges and seeking solutions through regional initiatives. He advocated for a shared vision developed in cooperation with the international community, rather than one imposed externally.

Fidan also addressed the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, noting that the first round of technical talks commenced in Switzerland. He discussed the issue with Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, and highlighted the political will demonstrated by both sides. However, he acknowledged that several provisions, particularly those related to sanctions and nuclear verification, remain under discussion during a 60-day period.
