Ukraine Declares Anchorage Understandings Between Putin and Trump ‘Certainly Dead Now’

Ankara: Ukraine's foreign minister on Sunday declared that any supposed understandings reached between the US and Russian presidents during their summit in Anchorage last year are 'certainly dead now.' "The reality makes one thing clear: if the 'Spirit of Anchorage' ever existed, it is certainly dead now," Andrii Sybiha stated on the US social media platform X, dismissing Russia's claims about 'understandings' reached between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin during their August 2025 meeting.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sybiha urged Moscow to abandon belief in such 'spirits' and instead engage with Ukraine's 'serious proposals' for negotiations to end the ongoing conflict. He emphasized, "For Russia, the lesson of Anchorage is that any peace plan developed without Ukraine is doomed to become a spirit and disappear."

In recent days, Russian officials have accused the US of drifting away from what they described as 'understandings' reached in Alaska. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio refuted these claims on Thursday, asserting that no agreement had been reached between Moscow and Washington. "There was a proposal in Alaska, but there was no agreement in Alaska. If there had been an agreement, we would have had an end to the war," Rubio stated.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Rubio's remarks as 'inelegant' and called for 'clarification' regarding the 'entire situation' concerning the US's role as a mediator in the ongoing war.
