Ankara: Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stormed the Palestinian town of Silwan, south of Al-Aqsa Mosque, on Tuesday under heavy security protection, according to local authorities. The incursion was marked by a significant presence of Israeli occupation forces throughout the area.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Jerusalem Governorate shared on Facebook that the incursion took place 'amid strict security measures and a heavy deployment of Israeli occupation forces across the area.' A video accompanying the post depicted the extremist minister entering Silwan, flanked by a heavy security escort.
Silwan, a Palestinian town in occupied East Jerusalem, has been a longstanding flashpoint due to issues such as illegal settlement expansion, home demolitions, and frequent Israeli raids. These actions have led to heightened tensions in the region.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the location of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. The country annexed the entire city in 1980, a move that has not been recognized by the international community. Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, in accordance with international resolutions that reject Israel's occupation of the city.
