Ankara: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday urged world nations to push for a joint artificial intelligence (AI) with shared rules without delay. Speaking at an international event on artificial intelligence, Guterres emphasized the urgency of establishing global AI regulations to ensure that the technology serves as a force for good worldwide.
According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres highlighted an important UN initiative on artificial intelligence, as determined by the General Assembly, aiming to address the future implications of AI. The UN's Independent Scientific Panel on AI, consisting of 40 distinguished experts from various countries, has been formed to bridge the AI knowledge gap and assess its real impacts across global economies and societies.
Guterres detailed that the panel's role is to help distinguish between genuine scientific advancements and misleading information. He underscored that AI has the potential to significantly enhance global development, impacting sectors such as health, hunger, education, and climate change. However, he also warned of the potential harm AI can inflict if left unregulated.
The Secretary-General stressed that as AI continues to progress without unified guidelines, governments and citizens could lose control over its outcomes. He urged governments not to delay in establishing these regulations. The panel's work will adapt as AI technology evolves, and the first-ever 'Global Dialogue on AI Governance' will take place in Geneva next week, with participation from various nations.
Guterres expressed his anticipation of collaborating with member states at the event to advance this crucial work. He also announced his intent to propose strategies that will enable countries to build the necessary capacity to manage AI technology effectively and equitably.
