Brussels: The Belgian government is evaluating the possibility of recognizing Palestine after Hamas announced the dissolution of its governing body in the Gaza Strip. Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot instructed his Cabinet to prepare a decision regarding the recognition of Palestine, as reported by the Belga news agency.

According to Anadolu Agency, the move comes after Prime Minister Bart De Wever's announcement last year at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where he stated that Belgium's recognition of Palestine would be contingent upon certain conditions being met. The situation has evolved with the recent developments in Gaza, prompting a renewed consideration of the matter.

The majority party, CD and V, has called for the immediate recognition of Palestine, arguing that the dissolution of Hamas's governing body removes a significant obstacle that had previously delayed Belgium's formal recognition. This political shift within Belgium's government indicates a potential change in its foreign policy stance toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Prevot has indicated that discussions regarding recognition are imminent, although he has not committed to a specific timeline. He stated, "I don't know if we will be ready by Friday, but it will be on the table soon," suggesting that the issue is being treated with urgency by the Belgian authorities.
