Sudan’s Burhan Firm on Rejecting Proposals Lacking Security Assurance

Khartoum: Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declared that Sudan will not entertain any proposal that fails to meet the expectations of the Sudanese people or ensure their security and stability. Al-Burhan, who also serves as the head of the army, communicated this stance during an address to worshippers after Friday prayers at Sheikh al-Tayeb Mosque in Umm Marrahi, near the capital city of Khartoum.

According to Anadolu Agency, al-Burhan emphasized the army's progress in the ongoing conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), attributing it to the unwavering support and determination of the Sudanese people. He assured the public of his commitment to handing over the state only through a national consensus that includes all Sudanese factions.

Al-Burhan's comments came in response to a US proposal urging a 90-day humanitarian truce, which would pave the way for negotiations on a permanent ceasefire and a civilian-led transition towards elections. The proposal also suggested a UN-led mechanism to facilitate limited RSF withdrawals.

Two senior Sudanese officials revealed on Friday that the government's response to the US proposal outlined security measures, which included the withdrawal, disarmament, and demobilization of RSF fighters. It also called for the reintegration of eligible personnel into the military under UN supervision once a permanent ceasefire is achieved.

The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, sparked by disputes over integrating the RSF into the national military. This strife has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing nearly 13 million people.
