UK Experiences Unprecedented Streak of 34C-Plus Days Amid Persistent Heat Wave

Muscat: The UK: is set to endure another scorching day with temperatures anticipated to hit 35C (95F), as the current heat wave is expected to last until the end of next week. This prolonged period of high temperatures is likely to continue until cooler and more unsettled weather conditions arrive.

According to Anadolu Agency, Thursday marked the eighth instance this year where temperatures have reached or exceeded 34C (93F), surpassing the previous annual record of seven such days, which was established in 1976 and matched in 2020. This extended period of heat has also resulted in unusually warm nights across England, where five weather stations recorded a "tropical night" with temperatures not dipping below 20C (68F).

The current heat wave, the third of the year, began earlier this week and is distinguished by its anticipated length. While no daily temperature records are expected to be broken, another day with temperatures above 34C (93F) is forecasted for Friday. The hottest conditions are predicted to move farther west, affecting regions such as Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and eastern Wales, where temperatures are expected to reach 34C (93F) or 35C (95F).

Some regions may experience limited relief over the weekend due to a northeasterly breeze bringing cooler air from the North Sea. While eastern parts of England may see a reduction in heat intensity on Saturday, areas across the south and east are still expected to meet heat wave criteria.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued amber and yellow heat health alerts, which remain in effect across significant portions of England until Sunday. The Met Office has confirmed that 2026 has now recorded eight days with temperatures at or above 34C (93F). This includes two days during the May heat wave, four in June, and two so far in the current spell, setting a new annual record.
