New york: The US on Friday reiterated its commitment to a diplomatic resolution concerning the Iran nuclear issue, following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. However, it also warned Tehran of accountability for any actions threatening international peace and security.
According to Anadolu Agency, Tammy Bruce, the US deputy representative to the UN, emphasized that while progress has been made in negotiations with Iran, the continuation of talks hinges on Tehran fulfilling its obligations. "We made progress in our discussions with Iran with the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding," Bruce stated. "The door to diplomacy remains open, and is our preferred path to resolve concerns related to Iran's nuclear program."
Bruce's remarks were made in the context of US President Donald Trump's recent statement that Iran had requested the continuation of talks, to which the US had agreed, although he noted that a previously reached cease-fire was now over. "The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!" Trump posted on Truth Social.
Bruce further expressed US hopes for Iran to return to compliance with its commitments and engage seriously in negotiations to reach a final agreement. Nevertheless, she warned that successful diplomacy is contingent on Iran not violating its "basic obligations." Bruce cautioned, "While dialogue remains possible, we cannot negotiate while Iran reneges on basic obligations. The United States stands ready to hold Iran to account for its acts that defy international peace and security."
In addition to diplomatic warnings, Bruce issued a stern message regarding potential military actions. "If you shoot at civilian objects or ships, we will respond," she declared, underscoring the US's readiness to counter any attacks on civilian targets and commercial shipping.
The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed in mid-June under Pakistani mediation, aimed to end the military conflict between Iran and the US and achieve a lasting peace agreement. However, recent days have seen renewed hostilities, with Iran launching strikes on US military infrastructure in several Middle Eastern countries in retaliation for US attacks, escalating tensions in the region.
