Ankara: The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has halted the practice of stopping moving vehicles to detain immigrants after two men were fatally shot roughly one week apart in the states Texas and Maine, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The agency's leadership has instructed officers to cease pulling over occupied vehicles for arrests or questioning passengers, a tactic that officials noted was crucial for meeting the administration's daily arrest targets.
According to Anadolu Agency, the decision followed an incident where a federal officer shot and killed a 26-year-old man in Biddeford, Maine, during an operation linked to a removal order. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the officer discharged his weapon due to concerns for public safety. A similar operation in Houston resulted in the death of another man just a week earlier.
An ICE spokesman declined to confirm specific policy adjustments but stated, "We are always evaluating our procedures to keep our officers safe and criminals off our streets." The report also indicated that ICE will mandate body cameras for arrest teams and intends to update de-escalation training for its officers.
