Brazil Supreme Court Restricts Flavio Bolsonaro’s Access to Former President During Campaign

Brazil: Brazil's Supreme Court has issued a 90-day ban preventing Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro from visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. The decision comes ahead of the presidential election scheduled for October 4, in which Flavio is a candidate with his father's endorsement.

According to Anadolu Agency, the restriction follows a livestream event where Flavio Bolsonaro read a handwritten letter from Jair Bolsonaro. In the letter, the former president urged political unity in support of his son's campaign. This act prompted Justice Alexandre de Moraes to implement the visitation ban, which will extend through the first round of the election, limiting Flavio's access to his father during a crucial campaign period.

The court has also demanded an explanation from the former president's legal team within 48 hours regarding his awareness of the letter's publication online. Flavio Bolsonaro, positioning himself as the primary conservative contender against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, criticized the ruling as 'disproportionate.' He accused Justice Moraes of election interference, while his campaign lawyer labeled the decision 'illegal and unconstitutional,' asserting it infringes on his familial and legal rights.

Jair Bolsonaro, despite his conviction in September 2025 for attempting to overturn the 2022 election results, retains considerable influence among Brazil's right-wing. He was sentenced to over 27 years in prison but currently serves under house arrest due to health issues, with restrictions on social media and public communication.

The political landscape is further complicated by Flavio Bolsonaro's alleged connections to a banker implicated in a financial scandal and a public conflict with his stepmother, Michelle Bolsonaro. US President Donald Trump has expressed support for Jair Bolsonaro after his conviction and recently met Flavio Bolsonaro at the White House, reinforcing international attention on the unfolding political drama in Brazil.
