Ankara: France summoned Iran's charge d'affaires on Tuesday following what the French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux described as an "extremely serious" act of intimidation targeting two members of the embassy staff in Iran on July 19.

According to Anadolu Agency, this incident prompted a strong reaction from France, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasizing the seriousness of the situation to his Iranian counterpart on Monday. The Iranian diplomat was summoned by the secretary-general of the French Foreign Ministry at Barrot's request.

Confavreux highlighted that France conveyed its "strongest condemnation" of what they termed a "premeditated and deliberate" aggression. He stated that France views the incident as a "flagrant violation of international law and the Vienna Conventions," which are designed to ensure the security of diplomatic personnel and underpin state relations.

Further, France has called on Iranian authorities to establish the facts of the incident, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure the security of French diplomatic premises and personnel, in line with their international obligations. The summons came after Barrot accused Iranian security services of detaining and questioning two embassy staff members in Tehran, with one reportedly being physically assaulted.

Barrot described the incident as an "extremely serious act of intimidation" that "cannot remain without consequences." As of now, there has been no response from Iran regarding these allegations.
