Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan engaged in a crucial phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday, focusing on significant regional developments.

According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions between Fidan and Guterres revolved around the UN chief's visits to Syria and Cyprus. During a news conference in Damascus, Guterres announced that a comprehensive report on Israeli violations in Syria will be submitted to the UN Security Council later this month. He emphasized the importance of respecting Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging Israel to adhere to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

Guterres highlighted the resilience of the Syrian people, stating, "The atrocities Syria has witnessed have not broken the Syrian people's resolve to pursue their legitimate aspirations." He also expressed concern about the inadequacy of UN humanitarian assistance, which currently fulfills only 20% of the needs in Syria.

Guterres, who arrived in Damascus on Saturday for a three-day visit, held discussions with President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. During these talks, he reiterated the UN's commitment to Syria's sovereignty and called for international support for the country's recovery.

In a related development, the UN announced that Secretary-General Guterres would visit Cyprus to advance the peace process. According to spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the visit, scheduled from July 27 to 29, aims to reinforce Guterres' commitment to the Cyprus issue. During his visit, Guterres is expected to meet with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Tufan Erhurman, Greek Cypriot administration leader Nikos Christodoulides, and other stakeholders to discuss efforts to support stability and advance peace on the island through the UN peacekeeping mission, UNFICYP.
