Beirut: The Israeli army carried out a massive explosion Tuesday in the southern Lebanese town of Majdal Zoun, marking a significant breach of a US-mediated framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel. The explosion was reported by Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA), which noted the incident occurred in the town of Tyre but did not provide details regarding the nature of the explosion or any resulting casualties or damage.

According to Anadolu Agency, Majdal Zoun is one of the areas where Israeli forces have maintained a military presence in southern Lebanon despite the agreement. The US-mediated framework agreement, signed on June 26, stipulated a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas in southern Lebanon, in tandem with the deployment of the Lebanese army.

On July 21, the Lebanese army deployed in the town of Zawtar al-Gharbiya, marking the first phase of the agreement's implementation after Israeli forces withdrew from the area. This town is one of the designated pilot zones under the initial stage of the agreement.

Despite the agreement, Israel continues to occupy areas in southern Lebanon, with some territories held for decades and others seized during the 2023-2024 conflict. During the latest offensive, Israeli forces advanced more than 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory, exacerbating tensions in the region.

Since March 2, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have resulted in 4,332 deaths and 12,236 injuries, as reported by the Lebanese Health Ministry. The ongoing conflict underscores the fragile state of peace in the region and the challenges faced in implementing the US-mediated framework agreement.
