Ankara: At least nine civilians, including two women, were killed and 14 others injured in an attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Kordofan state in western Sudan, a local medical group said Wednesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Sudan Doctors Network stated that RSF forces targeted residents in the Al-Jamama area for allegedly collaborating with the Sudanese army. The attack resulted in significant displacement and included the looting of a local market, a health center, and other civilian properties, further exacerbating the humanitarian situation by depriving residents of essential services.

The network condemned the attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, asserting that the killings, forced displacement, and looting constituted serious violations of international humanitarian law. They urged the RSF leadership to cease attacks on civilians, avoid targeting residents based on alleged cooperation with the army, and respect international humanitarian laws that protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including health facilities.

The medical group also appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent further violations. As of now, the RSF has not made any immediate comments regarding the accusations.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has been escalating since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the army and the RSF over plans to integrate the paramilitary force into the military. This war has led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing nearly 13 million people.
