Ankara: Two public swimming sites on the River Seine in Paris were closed Wednesday after fuel oil pollution reached the waterway, according to French broadcaster BFMTV. The closures were implemented at the sites near Pont Marie and Quai de Bercy, following the detection of pollution that had originated in the southeastern suburb of Saint-Maur-des-Fosses.

According to Anadolu Agency, officials stated that the pollution was caused by the illegal discharge of approximately 3,000 liters (792 gallons) of fuel oil into a street drain in Saint-Maur-des-Fosses last week. This discharge eventually made its way into the Seine, resulting in traces of pollution being detected since Sunday. The largest concentration of pollution reached the swimming sites on Wednesday, prompting the closures.

The Paris municipality has described the incident as "serious" and has expressed its intention to file a legal complaint for environmental damage. The authorities have indicated that the swimming sites could potentially reopen within hours or days, depending on the improvement of water quality, although no specific timetable has been confirmed. Prior to this, the pollution had already led to the closure of a swimming site in the nearby area of Maisons-Alfort.
