Ankara: Trkiye and Beirut share "deep-rooted ties," said Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Thursday, adding that there is a "strong" drive to work together to serve both nations' interests. "There is a strong will to cooperate in ways that serve the interests of both countries and contribute to regional stability," Aoun told a joint news conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Turkish capital Ankara.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Lebanese President emphasized the significance of the relationship between Trkiye and Lebanon, highlighting Trkiye's vital role within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Aoun expressed gratitude for the unwavering support Trkiye has provided, particularly under the leadership of President Erdogan, which has fortified the bilateral ties. During the visit, Aoun expressed his appreciation for Erdogan's hospitality and viewed the dialogue as a pivotal moment for enhancing cooperation. "Long live Lebanese-Turkish friendship," Aoun proclaimed, signaling a hopeful outlook for future collaborations.
Addressing the ongoing challenges faced by Lebanon, President Aoun reiterated the country's demand for a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories. He described the extensive hardships endured by Lebanon due to Israeli actions, including displacement and devastation, yet affirmed the Lebanese people's resilience. Aoun outlined Lebanon's objectives to defend its sovereignty, rebuild, and secure a promising future. "We are striving to achieve this. We are working for Israel's complete withdrawal from Lebanese territory, for displaced people to return to their homes, for reconstruction, and for the revival of the economy," he stated. He emphasized Lebanon's commitment to maintaining national dignity and sovereignty without external interference.
Highlighting the historical bonds between Ankara and Beirut, Aoun invoked the principle of Trkiye's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, "Peace at home, peace in the world," as a guiding philosophy. He stressed that peace is rooted in strong governance, economic stability, and respect for sovereignty and natural resources. Aoun's visit marked him as only the third Lebanese president to visit Trkiye in 70 years, underscoring the significance of the event. "My visit will mark the beginning of a new era in Trkiye-Lebanon relations," Aoun declared, advocating for enhanced partnership, mutual trust, and joint action, viewing Lebanon's stability as a cornerstone for regional peace.
Aoun extended his gratitude to the Turkish government and its people for their steadfast support during Lebanon's challenging times, notably their aid after the 2020 Beirut Port explosion. The Lebanese leader's statements emphasized the enduring friendship and potential for strategic collaboration between the two nations.
