Ankara: The European Commission announced a substantial disbursement of £3.47 billion ($3.98 billion) to Ukraine, focused on bolstering the nation's military capabilities. This funding, part of the defense segment of the £90 billion Ukraine Support Loan, aims to enhance Kyiv's defense infrastructure, specifically targeting drones, missiles, air defense systems, and Gripen fighter jets.

According to Anadolu Agency, the European Commission emphasized the importance of this financial package, stating it would aid Ukraine in defending its airspace while enhancing defense industrial cooperation between Kyiv and the European Union. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, "Today, we are investing an additional £3.47 billion to help protect Ukraine's skies." The initiative is part of the EU's emerging "Drone Deal," which aims to integrate Europe's industrial capabilities with Ukraine's defense innovations.

The EU Commission explained that this disbursement is part of the first product schedule for drone procurement, intended to expedite the delivery of essential military equipment. Further funding for drones, ammunition, air defense systems, and missiles is anticipated to be approved and disbursed in the upcoming weeks.

This latest payment builds on previous support under the same program, including £3.2 billion in macro-financial assistance disbursed on June 25, £3.9 billion under the defense window on June 30, and £1.1 billion on July 15. The European bloc has outlined plans to allocate a total of £28.3 billion by 2026 to reinforce Ukraine's defense industrial capacity, with the final allocation expected by September and disbursements continuing through the year's end.

The Ukraine Support Loan comprises £60 billion dedicated to enhancing defense capabilities and industrial production, alongside £30 billion in budget support to sustain government functions, essential public services, and economic resilience.
