Trkiye Closely Monitors Diplomatic Efforts to End Israeli Attacks and Occupation: President Erdogan

Ankara: Trkiye is "closely" following diplomatic initiatives seeking an end to Israel's attacks and occupation, stated President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan expressed this commitment during a joint news conference with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, highlighting Trkiye's readiness to contribute to these diplomatic efforts and to strengthen bilateral relations in various fields.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan emphasized the importance of the growing dialogue between Lebanon and Syria, underscoring the potential benefits for both nations. Trkiye aims to play an active role in initiatives to safeguard Lebanon's sovereignty, particularly following the withdrawal of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Erdogan expressed his pleasure in hosting the Lebanese president, marking the first visit to Trkiye by a Lebanese head of state in 17 years, and acknowledged Aoun's election as a significant step towards enhancing security in Lebanon.

Erdogan recalled Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's recent visit to Istanbul, noting that discussions with Aoun focused on regional developments amid the ongoing Israeli occupation in southern Lebanon. Trkiye remains committed to supporting Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, recognizing the country's prolonged challenges due to regional conflicts.

Aoun mentioned ongoing discussions regarding a potential international force to replace the UN force in southern Lebanon, with proposals involving European, Turkish, NATO-backed, Arab, and Islamic participation. Lebanon prioritizes preventing a power vacuum and ensuring that any new force supports the Lebanese army while respecting national sovereignty.

Trkiye previously contributed to the naval wing of UNIFIL, the current UN force, and Erdogan reiterated condolences for the Lebanese people, acknowledging the toll of over 4,300 deaths since March 2, 2026. He affirmed Trkiye's strong response to the attacks from the outset and commitment to strengthening Lebanon's institutional capacity, providing humanitarian and technical assistance, and supporting reconstruction efforts in southern Lebanon.
