Accra: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Monday that Tehran is not seeking to escalate tensions in the Middle East, emphasizing the country's commitment to defending its security and interests. In a statement, Pezeshkian remarked that Iran would utilize its full capabilities to safeguard its national interests and territorial integrity.

According to Anadolu Agency, the remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region following US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February, which led to retaliatory strikes by Tehran. A ceasefire was agreed upon between the US and Iran in April, and a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding was signed in June to end military conflict and promote peace. However, the agreement fell apart last month, resulting in renewed exchanges of attacks between the two nations.

US President Donald Trump recently canceled a planned military strike against Iran, explaining that the decision followed requests from Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries to allow time for finalizing a peace deal. Trump mentioned that Israel has also committed to this framework.

In related developments, President Pezeshkian held a phone conversation with Khalil al-Hayya, the new Hamas chief, discussing the Palestinian situation in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's support for the Palestinian people's rights and congratulated Hayya on his election as Hamas leader. This dialogue underscores the ongoing direct communication between Iran and Hamas.

The phone call occurred after the Board of Peace unveiled a draft agreement on Friday, which outlines the next steps in US President Trump's Gaza plan. The draft includes security, administrative, and transitional arrangements in the enclave, alongside a proposed political track aimed at stabilizing the region.
