Ankara: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Monday that Ukraine is the "key piece" in Russian President Vladimir Putin's efforts to restore influence over former Soviet states. Speaking at a meeting of Ukraine's ambassadors, Zelenskyy emphasized Putin's goal to "put back together what has already fallen apart."

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy highlighted that the stronger and more independent the countries of the former Soviet Union are, the harder it will be for Putin to achieve his objectives. He remarked, "Ukraine is the key piece in this puzzle," underscoring the strategic importance of Ukraine in the region.

Zelenskyy further elaborated on Putin's intentions, stating that the Russian leader wants to "break" Ukraine because a defeated Kyiv would simplify Moscow's efforts to "deal with the other countries of the post-Soviet time and space." He acknowledged the widespread understanding and appreciation of Ukraine's significant contributions, which have been paid for at a high cost, with the lives of many Ukrainians, to the independence of other states.

The Ukrainian President also underscored the importance of strengthening diplomatic ties with Azerbaijan, emphasizing Ukraine's support for Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity. "This year, after a pause of many years in our relations, we also visited Armenia for the first time. All of this will help," he noted, highlighting Ukraine's proactive diplomatic engagement in the region.

Zelenskyy concluded by asserting that Ukraine's active presence in the former Soviet space is crucial for safeguarding the independence of other countries, thereby playing a pivotal role in maintaining regional stability and autonomy.
