Beirut: A wildfire in and around Indonesia's Mount Bromo in East Java has entered its eighth day, with authorities continuing to battle renewed flames. The blaze has already consumed 520 hectares (1,285 acres) of land.

According to Anadolu Agency, the latest flare-up was reported at Puncak 30 in the Sumber district of Probolinggo regency, situated within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Oemar Sjarief, head of the Probolinggo Disaster Mitigation Agency, noted that a previously small hotspot expanded significantly on Monday morning, affecting forest and surrounding vegetation.

Firefighting teams are engaged in both ground and aerial operations to contain the blaze and prevent further spread. Three helicopters have been deployed for water-bombing operations, targeting areas that are challenging for ground crews due to the rugged terrain. Additionally, firefighters are utilizing water tankers and water-spraying drones.

Authorities have indicated that fires were still active at two main locations on Monday: Puncak 30 in Probolinggo and Dengklek in Pasuruan regency. Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that water-bombing operations would persist until the fire is completely extinguished, with a helicopter capable of making up to 30 drops a day, weather permitting. Firefighters are also monitoring smoldering areas to prevent the flames from reigniting.
