UN Appeals for US-Iran Dialogue as Critical Deadline Approaches

New york: The UN on Monday called on the US and Iran to restart negotiations as a crucial 60-day deadline for reaching a broader agreement looms, emphasizing that a military solution to the conflict is not feasible.

According to Anadolu Agency, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric informed reporters that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has consistently advocated for diplomacy since the US and Israel commenced attacks on Iran on February 28. Guterres' message underscores the absence of a military resolution to the ongoing conflict. He urged both the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States to return to the negotiating table to pursue a peaceful and enduring settlement. The Secretary-General's appeal aims to prevent military escalation and reduce the recent rise in aggressive rhetoric.

The urgency of the UN's call comes as the 60-day period for negotiations nears its conclusion without achieving a comprehensive agreement. This timeframe was established under a June understanding between the US and Iran, setting a window for discussions aimed at a wider accord.

Moreover, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei recently stated that the 60-day deadline for talks, following the June 17 memorandum of understanding, had become irrelevant due to what he described as 'flagrant' violations by Washington.

Dujarric was also questioned about a meeting in Israel between President Donald Trump's adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, he did not provide an update on these discussions.

In April, Tehran and Washington agreed to a ceasefire and later signed a memorandum of understanding in June intended to resolve their military conflict and reach a lasting peace agreement. Despite these efforts, the deal fell apart last month, leading to a series of attacks exchanged between Iran and the US for almost two weeks before President Trump unexpectedly ceased the hostilities in a bid to revive discussions.
