UN Peacekeeping Force Reports Sharp Rise in Israeli Military Activity in Southern Lebanon

Beirut: The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported a notable increase in Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon over the past two weeks, expressing concern for the civilians affected by the escalating tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency, UNIFIL recorded an average of 137 projectiles per day between August 5 and August 16, with a peak of 208 projectiles on a single Saturday and 185 on the following Sunday. This surge in military activity has led to significant disruptions for local communities, as many families find themselves displaced or forced to alter their daily lives due to the prevailing insecurity and uncertainty.

UNIFIL peacekeepers have maintained their field presence by conducting patrols, monitoring the situation, removing obstacles from roads, reducing explosive-related risks, and facilitating humanitarian aid access. The peacekeeping force emphasized that UN Security Council Resolution 1701 remains the cornerstone for restoring stability in the region. Adopted in 2006, the resolution calls for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah and advocates for a stronger deployment of the Lebanese army and UNIFIL in southern Lebanon.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has expressed his support for extending UNIFIL's mandate, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the continued presence of international forces in the area. UNIFIL's current mandate is set to expire at the end of 2026 amid ongoing international debate regarding the future and mission of the force. Beirut maintains that UNIFIL's presence is crucial for maintaining stability in southern Lebanon.

These developments occur in the context of efforts to consolidate security arrangements linked to a 'framework formula' agreement signed by Beirut and Tel Aviv on June 26. The agreement outlines a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territories, followed by the deployment of Lebanese army forces into vacated areas. It also calls for the disarmament of 'armed groups,' specifically referencing Hezbollah.

Israeli forces continue to hold positions in several areas of southern Lebanon, some of which have been under occupation for decades. Other regions have been occupied since the conflicts of 2023 and 2024, during which Israeli forces advanced over 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory. The death toll from repeated Israeli assaults in southern Lebanon has risen to 4,346 since March 2, with 11 fatalities reported from two separate Israeli airstrikes on a recent Saturday.
