London: A consortium involving Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reportedly agreed to acquire about 38% of English Premier League club Liverpool, according to The Athletic.
According to Anadolu Agency, The report surfaced shortly after Liverpool's owner, Fenway Sports Group, announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to sell a minority stake in the club to 1892 Holdings. The specific size or financial details of the transaction were not disclosed at the time of the announcement. Initial media reports suggested the stake was approximately 30%, but The Athletic reported that the consortium had agreed to acquire around 38%.
The agreement includes a mechanism that allows 1892 Holdings the potential to acquire a controlling stake in the club within the next year. However, sources from both sides of the transaction emphasized that this provision is an option rather than a formal commitment to further investment.
1892 Holdings is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and includes investments from Bhatia, the Mittal Family Trusts, K5 Sports, and EE Capital. Bezos is noted as the lead investor in K5 Sports, while EE Capital represents the family office of Elaine and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Despite the transaction, Fenway Sports Group will maintain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool under the current agreement.
