Brussels: The European Commission on Tuesday called on Israel to comply with international law following far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's remarks advocating the killing of dozens of Palestinians in Gaza every night.
According to Anadolu Agency, the European Commission's spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, emphasized during a press briefing in Brussels that the EU expects Israel to adhere to its international obligations, including international humanitarian law. Hipper stressed the importance of ensuring the protection of civilians at all times.
Additionally, Hipper highlighted a proposal currently under consideration in the Council to include Ben-Gvir on the sanctions list under the global human rights sanctions regime. This move comes in response to Ben-Gvir's recent controversial call for increased airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and for Israel to kill '30 to 40' Palestinians daily. He also renewed calls for resettling Israelis in the Palestinian enclave, a move that would occur at the expense of the indigenous population.
