Nato: NATO said Wednesday that it was prepared to address any threat amid reports that Iran had considered striking US military assets in Europe if US President Donald Trump further escalates the war.
According to Anadolu Agency, a NATO official stated in a written statement that the alliance is ready to address any threats and will take necessary actions to defend all its Allies. The official highlighted NATO's past actions, notably the interception of ballistic missiles that were directed towards Trkiye from Iran on four separate occasions earlier this year.
The statement underscored NATO's strong and effective deterrence and defense posture, showcasing their capability to intercept potential threats. Recent reports indicated that Iranian forces evaluated potential strikes on US military assets in southeastern Europe, including Bulgaria, which recently approved the use of its Bezmer air base by US refueling aircraft.
Cyprus was also mentioned as a potential target, with past incidents such as a British air base being hit by a drone in March. These developments emerge amid stalled negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz and diminishing prospects for renewed talks between Tehran and Washington.
President Trump announced on Tuesday that there were no ongoing or scheduled talks with Tehran. Iranian military officials have previously warned that any military base used to launch attacks against Iranian territory could be targeted in retaliation.
Earlier efforts to de-escalate tensions included a memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the US in June, aimed at ending the war and paving the way for a broader agreement. However, this arrangement broke down amid accusations of violations and renewed hostilities. Diplomatic efforts have failed to yield progress on reopening the Strait of Hormuz or resuming broader negotiations.
