Trkiye Challenges Greece’s Renewable Energy Framework in Aegean Sea

Ankara: Greece's newly announced renewable energy spatial framework for the Aegean Sea will have no legal consequences on Trkiye's stance concerning the ongoing disputes between the two nations, the Turkish Foreign Ministry declared on Wednesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli stated that the framework, similar to other Greek initiatives, holds no legal effect on Trkiye, particularly regarding geographical formations whose sovereignty has not been transferred to Greece under international treaties. Keceli emphasized that past statements have consistently highlighted that such initiatives will not alter Trkiye's legal position on Aegean matters.

Keceli urged against unilateral actions in enclosed or semi-enclosed seas like the Aegean and Mediterranean, highlighting that international maritime law promotes cooperation among coastal states in these waters. He reaffirmed Trkiye's readiness to collaborate with Greece as one of the two coastal states of the Aegean Sea.

He further noted that under the Athens Declaration on 'Good Neighborly Relations' dated December 7, 2023, Trkiye upholds a position advocating for a sincere and comprehensive approach to resolving issues based on international law, equity, and good-neighborliness.
