Ankara: Canada has decided to remove fish and seafood from a list of US products subject to counter-tariffs, following feedback from domestic industries, as announced by the Finance Department on Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, this revision comes just a day after Ottawa revealed retaliatory duties on approximately $20 billion worth of US goods. This was in response to tariffs imposed by Washington. The Finance Department stated that the decision was made "to protect against broader economic harms," although no further details were provided.

In a statement posted on the US social media platform X, the department emphasized its ongoing collaboration with Canadian industries to evaluate the effectiveness of these measures, focusing on sectors impacted by US tariffs. Ottawa also mentioned plans to make further adjustments to guarantee its measures remain a dollar-for-dollar and rate-for-rate response to US tariffs.

Canada's counter-tariffs are set to be implemented on September 8. Concerns had been raised by some Canadian seafood processors who import US lobster, fearing that the duties would increase their costs. Additionally, domestic producers were worried that the measures could lead to further US retaliation.

Notably, the initial package of counter-tariffs mainly mirrored products affected by the $20 billion US tariffs that took effect on Saturday, including pulp and paper products. However, fish and seafood were not among the sectors specifically targeted by Washington.
