Ankara: Heavy rains and floods have led to the displacement of 168 families and the destruction or damage of 271 homes in the Abu Kershola locality of Sudan's South Kordofan state, as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the IOM stated that the severe weather conditions forced families to evacuate approximately 10 villages within the locality. Field teams from the organization observed that 138 homes were completely destroyed, while 133 homes suffered partial damage.

The displaced families have sought refuge in temporary shelters located in open areas within the same locality, as per the UN migration agency. Sudan typically experiences heavy rains during the autumn season, spanning from June to October, which often results in flooding across various regions of the country.

The current impact of the floods is further compounded by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has been escalating since April 2023. The war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has significantly hampered the nation's ability to manage and respond to such natural disasters effectively. The conflict has resulted in the death of tens of thousands, the displacement of approximately 13 million people, and has triggered one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally.
