Beirut: The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported Friday that it recorded 1,030 projectiles fired in southern Lebanon from August 21 to 27. Although levels of violence have decreased compared to earlier this year, the situation remains delicate.

According to Anadolu Agency, UNIFIL highlighted that the current scenario adversely affects civilians, with damage to homes and vital infrastructure. Local communities are reportedly facing challenges in recovery. UNIFIL peacekeepers are actively monitoring the situation and working with involved parties to prevent further escalation.

The peacekeeping mission emphasized the importance of adhering to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to reduce tensions, restore stability, and aid local recovery efforts. Adopted in 2006, the resolution aimed to end hostilities between Lebanon and Israel and establish a demilitarized zone between the Litani River and the Blue Line. Only the Lebanese army and UNIFIL are permitted in this area.

UNIFIL's mandate in southern Lebanon is scheduled to expire at the end of the year, with discussions ongoing about its future role. Beirut advocates for UNIFIL's continued presence to ensure regional stability.

On Friday, the Israeli army intensified its activities in the region, conducting demolitions in three towns and advancing towards Aita al-Jabal, causing fires in several locations. Additionally, nearby areas were subjected to artillery fire.

Lebanon's Health Ministry reported Friday that two individuals were killed, and eight injured over the past two days, raising the total casualties from Israeli assaults on southern Lebanon since March 2 to 4,352 dead and 12,318 injured. Israeli forces have maintained a presence in parts of southern Lebanon for decades, expanding their reach during previous conflicts in 2023 and 2024.
