Bishkek: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran would immediately reciprocate if the US returned to its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. This declaration was made during Pezeshkian's address at the 26th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in Kyrgyzstan's capital.

According to Anadolu Agency, Pezeshkian accused Washington of failing to honor the agreement less than two weeks after signing it, which led to a proportionate response from Tehran. He emphasized that the agreement followed 40 days of fighting and nearly three months of negotiations mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, eventually forcing the US to agree to a ceasefire after failing to achieve its objectives during the conflict.

The memorandum, reached in June with mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, included provisions to end hostilities, address the Strait of Hormuz, and initiate further negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Pezeshkian proposed initiatives to strengthen the SCO's role, suggesting the establishment of a bank, an export insurance and investment union, and an energy consortium.

The SCO summit, attended by leaders of its 10 member states, focused on regional security and political and economic cooperation. Founded in 2001, the SCO now includes Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, with Iran becoming a full member in 2023.
