The incidents involved Guendouzi and Greenwood, both of whom are former players for Lyon's rivals, Olympique Marseille. They allegedly made provocative gestures towards the home supporters, which resulted in a brawl as they exited the pitch. Video footage from the tunnel showed Lyon's goalkeeping coach, Antonio Ferreira, kicking Guendouzi, triggering another altercation involving players and staff.

Guendouzi further escalated tensions by gesturing towards the Lyon supporters and shouting "Allez l'OM," a phrase supporting his former club Marseille. The French midfielder later explained that Lyon supporters had directed repeated insults at his family during the warm-up and throughout the match, which deeply affected him.
