Ankara: Fernando Alonso has called for changes in the current Formula 1 regulations as he contemplates his future in the sport beyond the 2026 season. The 45-year-old Aston Martin driver, whose contract concludes at the end of the season, expressed that the decision to continue racing would depend more on the regulations than on the competitiveness of his car.

According to Anadolu Agency, Alonso voiced his concerns ahead of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, stating, "This is not the Formula 1 we grew up with. This is not the Formula 1 that we all want." He emphasized his desire to influence future regulations and contribute to bringing back what he describes as "the real Formula 1."

Alonso has been outspoken about the power-unit regulations introduced this season, criticizing the increased role of electrical power and energy management, which he describes as turning the competition into a "battery world championship." In response, Formula 1 has agreed to rebalance power-unit output starting from 2027 by increasing the contribution of the internal combustion engine and reducing electrical power.

Despite finishing ninth at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort and recording his best result of the season, Alonso remains unswayed in his decision about staying in Formula 1. He noted that Aston Martin needs to improve both its chassis and engine for the upcoming season. As the two-time world champion and holder of the record for the most Grand Prix starts, Alonso is set to make his 438th start at the Italian Grand Prix.
