Ljubljana: The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) announced on Monday it has filed a criminal complaint in Slovenia against Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar. The complaint alleges involvement in war crimes, acts of genocide, and torture in Gaza, coinciding with Sa'ar's anticipated visit to Ljubljana this week.

According to Anadolu Agency, the complaint was submitted to the Ljubljana District Prosecutor's Office and police. Sa'ar is scheduled to attend the inauguration of a new Israeli embassy in Ljubljana, based on information from the Movement for the Rights of Palestinians, a Slovenian social initiative and solidarity group.

The complaint charges Sa'ar with criminal responsibility for several actions during Israel's war in Gaza, including an attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza between October 8 and December 27, 2024, and the arrest and ongoing detention of the hospital's director, Dr. Hossam Abu Safiyeh. Furthermore, HRF accuses Sa'ar of participating in the destruction and occupation of Gaza, mass civilian displacement, and restricting essential supplies like food, water, fuel, and medical aid.

The organization claims the complaint is grounded in Slovenian law and international legal frameworks, such as the Fourth Geneva Convention, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and the UN Convention against Torture.

This filing follows previous actions by HRF related to Sa'ar, including a communication to the ICC before his visit to Brussels in February 2025 and legal measures connected to his visit to London in April 2025. The non-profit urged Slovenian authorities to investigate the allegations and ensure that Sa'ar does not evade accountability due to diplomatic status.

"No official, no matter how senior, stands above the law," stated HRF Director General Dyab Abou Jahjah. He emphasized the organization's demand for Slovenian authorities to investigate those accountable for what he described as crimes against Palestinians.

Recently, Slovenia vetoed a joint statement by the EU and its 27 member states condemning Israel's decision to construct new illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.
