US Stocks Plunge Amid Rising Treasury Yields and Climbing Oil Prices

Ankara: US stocks closed lower Wednesday, with the three major indexes posting a third consecutive session of losses as rising Treasury yields and oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 405.41 points, or 0.77%, to finish at 52,380.66. The S and P 500 declined 0.48% to 7,636.36, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.64% to close at 26,253.34. According to Anadolu Agency, US Treasury yields rose after the Treasury Department announced it would triple its buyback of longer-dated government debt to $6 billion. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note climbed to 4.857%, its highest since November 2023. Oil prices also continued to rise as escalating tensions between the US and Iran fueled concerns about further disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East. US President Donald Trump remarked that the conflict with Iran would 'end immediately' post the Nov. 3 midterm elections, asserting that Tehran 'can't hold out any longer.' When questioned about possible n egotiations with Iran, Trump stated, 'We're not looking for it. Yes, a negotiation could possibly happen, but it's not something we're looking at.' He also claimed that recent US strikes in the Strait of Hormuz had incapacitated about nine Iranian tankers, adding, 'You're going to see a lot more.' International benchmark Brent crude climbed 3.8% to $101.64 per barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate jumped 4.1% to $96.85. Both contracts recorded their highest settlement levels since May. The CBOE Volatility Index, also known as Wall Street's 'fear index,' increased 4.71% to 16.46. European stock markets also ended in negative territory as geopolitical tensions and rising oil prices continued to pressure risk appetite. The STOXX Europe 600 benchmark index fell 1.41% to 640.41 points. Britain's FTSE 100 declined 1.31% to 10,670.06 points, while Germany's DAX 40 dropped 1.66% to 25,576.45. France's CAC 40 lost 1.94% to close at 8,156.67 points, and Italy's FTSE MIB 30 decreased 0.58% to 51,875.24. S pain's IBEX 35 also fell 1.51% to end the day at 19,695.30 points.
