Greece: Greece has recorded 324 domestically acquired cases of West Nile virus this year, marking the highest annual figure on record, local media reported Thursday. The alarming number surpasses the previous record of 317 cases registered in 2018.

According to Anadolu Agency, the daily Kathimerini cited data from the National Public Health Organization indicating that health authorities have recorded 34 new infections and six additional deaths over the past week. This brings the death toll from the virus to 30, highlighting the growing concern over the outbreak.

Of the total cases reported, 217 patients developed complications affecting the central nervous system. Currently, 68 people remain hospitalized, with 32 receiving treatment in intensive care units, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.

The Attica region, which includes the capital Athens, accounted for 56.8% of reported exposures. This significant percentage indicates the concentration of cases in this densely populated area.

Health experts suggest that the actual number of infections may be considerably higher, as fewer than 1% of people infected with the virus develop severe symptoms. This underlines the challenge in accurately assessing the full scope of the outbreak.

Despite widespread mosquito activity across Europe, Greek authorities believe the outbreak has already passed its peak. However, vigilance remains crucial as the West Nile virus is transmitted primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Individuals over the age of 50 and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe illness.
