Damascus: Leaders of the BRICS grouping commenced their summit in India's capital as the US-Iran war extends into its seventh month, coinciding with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, now in its fifth year. The gathering aims to address global economic challenges exacerbated by these conflicts, including an energy crisis and heightened concerns over energy security, trade, and inflation.
According to Anadolu Agency, the summit, which convenes leaders and senior officials from the expanded BRICS group of 11 countries, seeks to foster dialogue on global governance and multilateralism. The group includes longstanding members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with new additions Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed optimism for constructive discussions, while China highlighted its commitment to promoting dialogue and negotiation to maintain regional and global peace.
The 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit commenced with a closed-door session focusing on 'Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism.' Leaders are set to participate in various activities, including the Bharat Innovates Exhibition, a tree-planting ceremony, and a gala dinner hosted by Modi. Notable attendees include Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, among others.
In light of tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, all BRICS members, Indian officials reported that the bloc's leaders have agreed on a consensus for a joint statement, expected to be released after the main events conclude.
On the second day, the summit will feature an open session titled 'Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.' The BRICS group, now representing approximately 49.5% of the global population, 40% of global GDP, and 26% of global trade, aims to strengthen its influence on the world stage. The previous summit was held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
