Trkiye Criticizes US Decision to Extend Arms Embargo Waiver for Greek Cypriots

Ankara: Trkiye on Saturday criticized the US decision to extend for another year the lifting of its arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration, warning that the move could further undermine trust on the island.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that Washington had extended the decision to lift the arms embargo until September 30, 2027. The ministry expressed its alignment with the views of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on the matter.

Ankara emphasized that actions potentially eroding trust between the island's two communities should be avoided, especially when the Greek Cypriot side is reportedly increasing pressure on the Turkish Cypriot people, who are considered co-owners of the island by Trkiye.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry also highlighted that the Greek Cypriot side's intensified armament activities were detrimental to regional stability. It reaffirmed Trkiye's commitment to defending the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and ensuring their security.

Furthermore, Trkiye committed to continuing its efforts to help the TRNC achieve its rightful place in the international community.
