Washington: Americans are increasingly sympathetic to Palestinians and critical of President Donald Trump's handling of key foreign policy issues, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll released ahead of the US midterm elections.

According to Anadolu Agency, the poll found that 38% of registered voters said their sympathies lay more with Palestinians, compared with 35% who said they sympathize more with Israelis. Another 27% did not offer an opinion. This result marks an all-time high for Palestinians and an all-time low for Israelis since Quinnipiac began asking the question in December 2001.

The poll also showed that 48% of voters believed the US is too supportive of Israel, while only 8% said Washington is not supportive enough. Some 34% considered the level of US support for Israel about right. The findings come as Trump faces broad disapproval over his overall performance. Only 33% of voters approve of his handling of the presidency, compared with 59% who disapprove.

His ratings on foreign policy were similarly weak, with 33% of voters approving and 60% disapproving. On Iran, 29% approved of his handling of the situation, while 65% disapproved. Voters also expressed caution over the US military presence in Iran. Thirty-nine percent favored keeping US forces there while negotiating a peace deal, while 30% supported withdrawing without a negotiated agreement. Twenty-two percent wanted military operations increased until Iran surrenders or agrees to a deal.

Voters gave Democrats an 11-point advantage over Republicans in the race for control of the House, with 49% favoring Democrats and 38% favoring Republicans.
