New delhi: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Saturday called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the US-Iran conflict during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi. Anwar emphasized the importance of peaceful negotiations and the need for all parties involved to cease actions that could exacerbate the situation.

According to Anadolu Agency, Anwar expressed his concerns over the prolonged conflict and rising tensions in the Middle East through a statement on US social media platform X. He urged the involved parties to return to negotiations and highlighted the importance of safeguarding the freedom and security of maritime passages through the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law. Anwar noted that any disruption in this crucial waterway could have significant implications for global energy security, trade, and the economy.

In addition to discussing the conflict, both leaders explored opportunities to enhance Malaysia-Iran trade and investments. They considered collaboration in various sectors, including energy, agriculture, palm oil, food security, the halal industry, technology, and higher education.

The conflict escalated when the US and Israel launched a war on Iran on February 28, leading to Tehran retaliating by firing missiles at Israel and targeting US bases in the region. Iran's subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz further disrupted global energy and trade flows.
