According to Anadolu Agency, Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori confirmed Vargas Llosa's acceptance of the nomination, emphasizing that his experience would enhance Peru's relations with Washington. The appointment is subject to the completion of necessary procedures before Vargas Llosa can officially assume the ambassadorial role. His nomination is part of broader efforts by Peru and the US to deepen cooperation on security and combat organized crime.

The announcement coincides with the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Lima as part of a Latin American tour focused on security, migration, and regional cooperation. During Rubio's visit, Peru declared its participation in the US-led Shield of the Americas initiative, aimed at strengthening cooperation against drug trafficking and transnational organized crime. Both governments have underscored the importance of deepening security cooperation in response to growing concerns over regional drug trafficking and organized crime.
