Damascus: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva leads voting intentions ahead of October's presidential election, but Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro is closing the gap. Lula has 39% of voting intentions for the first round, while Bolsonaro has 35%, according to the Datafolha survey released Friday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the four-point gap is narrower than in previous polling, highlighting a tightening race less than a month before Brazilians head to the polls. In a potential runoff between the two candidates, Lula leads 46% to 44%, according to the poll. The result is within the survey's margin of error, indicating a technical tie.

The poll was conducted between Sept. 8 and 10 among 2,002 voters in 125 municipalities across Brazil, with a margin of error of two percentage points. Lula has stronger support among lower-income voters, women and Catholics, while Flavio Bolsonaro leads among higher-income voters, men and evangelical voters, according to the survey.

The president also maintains a strong advantage in Brazil's Northeast, where he leads Bolsonaro 53% to 25%. The results come as the election campaign enters its final weeks, with security, the economy and the political legacy of former President Jair Bolsonaro emerging as key issues.

Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president's son, has become the main challenger to Lula after receiving his father's political backing. Brazil's first-round presidential election is scheduled for Oct. 4. A runoff will be held on Oct. 25 if no candidate secures more than half of the valid votes.
