Abu dhabi: Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov stated on Sunday that resolving the territorial issue remains the main task in efforts to settle the Ukraine conflict. Speaking in an interview with Russian media, Ushakov emphasized that each side of the conflict has its own perspective on what it could seek to advance in negotiations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ushakov revealed that during the BRICS summit in New Delhi, only Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira mentioned the Ukraine issue, indicating a possible understanding of Russia's position among BRICS leaders. Ushakov noted that the Ukraine issue was a significant topic during Russian President Vladimir Putin's bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

Ushakov expressed hope that the ongoing peace process regarding Ukraine will eventually yield a positive outcome. He also pointed out that agreements reached by Russia and the US during an August 2025 presidential meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, form the basis of the Ukraine peace process, describing it as 'lengthy and complicated.'

Ushakov stated that Russia's demands for a settlement remain unchanged, with no tightening of its position. He mentioned Abu Dhabi as a potential venue for trilateral Russia-US-Ukraine talks, citing discussions with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as confirmation of the UAE's readiness to host negotiations.

The aide highlighted that while a large number of issues need to be agreed upon before a trilateral meeting can occur, progress on the territorial issue would facilitate reaching agreements on other matters. He also mentioned that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have gained a better understanding of Russia's position following their recent talks with Putin in Moscow and subsequent discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. Both Moscow and Kyiv have shown interest in resuming trilateral negotiations, with October being considered as a possible timeframe.
