Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged BRICS countries and their partners to maintain "stable and unimpeded" industrial and supply chains against the backdrop of disruptions caused by the ongoing US-Iran conflict affecting the Strait of Hormuz. The call to action came during the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit held in New Delhi.
According to Anadolu Agency, President Xi emphasized the strategic advantage of BRICS nations rooted in emerging markets and their connections with the Global South. He advocated for openness and cooperation, aiming for "mutual benefit and win-win outcomes." Xi's remarks were made during an open session entitled "Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth."
Highlighting the Global South's role as a driving force toward a multipolar world, Xi urged countries to support multilateralism and adhere to international law. He stressed the importance of collectively drafting international rules, moving away from the notion that "might makes right."
Xi also emphasized the need for the Global South to support the authority and role of the United Nations and push for reforms in multilateral institutions to enhance efficiency. He advocated for improving the international financial architecture and increasing the representation of developing nations, alongside a reform of the World Trade Organization.
In his speech, Xi announced China's commitment to further opening its markets voluntarily and unilaterally. He also called for bolstering the New Development Bank's operations and enhancing cooperation among Global South countries.
Addressing technological advancements, Xi proposed accelerating the establishment of a global AI governance framework through consensus. China plans to lead by setting up an AI open-source zone for BRICS nations and promoting a digital industry cloud platform within the bloc.
President Xi encouraged BRICS nations to modernize traditional industries, develop new sectors, and plan for future industries. He also suggested initiatives in science and technology talent development, smart manufacturing, and the creation of a BRICS alliance for engineer training.
In a bid to strengthen economic ties, Xi proposed a partnership among BRICS countries for special economic zones. China will host the BRICS Services Trade Forum in 2027, and Beijing is set to host the bloc's annual summit next year.
