Danish Prime Minister Maintains Optimism in US-Greenland Talks

Helsinki: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Monday that it is too early to make definitive conclusions regarding the ongoing discussions between Denmark and the United States concerning Greenland. However, she expressed optimism about finding a productive path forward.

According to Anadolu Agency, Frederiksen made these remarks following the European Arctic Summit in Finland. She emphasized that while the high-level working group, which includes representatives from Denmark, the US, and Greenland, is still deliberating, there are already signs of progress. The prime minister conveyed her hope that Denmark and the US could reach a peaceful resolution through these discussions.

The trilateral working group was formed after Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland's then-Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt visited Washington in January. During this visit, they held meetings with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Despite the group's activities being largely out of public view, the discussions have attracted international attention due to former US President Donald Trump's past interest in acquiring Greenland for strategic reasons.

Frederiksen reiterated Denmark's commitment to enhancing cooperation with the US on security and defense matters, particularly in Greenland. She acknowledged the significant pressure on Greenland and expressed gratitude to European partners for their support amid the increased international focus on the Arctic region.

Furthermore, Frederiksen highlighted the growing involvement of European and transatlantic partners in Arctic security, noting the participation of 10 NATO allies in joint exercises in Greenland. She remarked that when she assumed office, the Arctic was not a major focus within the European Union or NATO, but there is now a collective effort to take greater responsibility for security in Greenland and the broader Arctic area.
