Athens: US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle urged vigilance against the threat of political violence Tuesday following the release of terrorist Nikos Maziotis. "The release of unrepentant terrorist Nikos Maziotis after 14 years in prison is a reminder of the need to remain vigilant against the threat of political violence. Maziotis and his fellow left-wing terrorists have no place in a civilized society," Guilfoyle wrote on US social media platform X. She emphasized that their "barbaric" actions deserved "complete and total condemnation." Guilfoyle further stated, "We will never go back to the era of assassination attempts, shootings, and bombings, and we will never cease in our pursuit of justice."

According to Anadolu Agency, Maziotis, the leader of Revolutionary Struggle, which was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the US State Department in 2009, was released from prison Monday after serving 14 years of a multiple life sentence imposed for his activities with the group. Maziotis was arrested along with six other members of Revolutionary Struggle in 2010, but violated the terms of his conditional release in 2012 and went into hiding during his trial, as reported by the Kathimerini newspaper.

In April 2014, the group, under Maziotis' leadership, claimed responsibility for a bomb blast outside a branch of the central bank in central Athens. Maziotis was rearrested by police on July 16, 2014, following a shootout in Athens' central tourist district that left four people wounded.
