Washington: US Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on Tuesday that the Department of Justice will actively investigate criminal activities involving artificial intelligence but will not pursue new regulations on the technology.
According to Anadolu Agency, Blanche addressed concerns during a White House press conference regarding the potential misuse of AI, especially in contexts such as elections. He emphasized that while there are existing criminal laws that cover illegal activities involving AI, the department's role is primarily prosecutorial, not regulatory. "If anybody associated with AI violates criminal law, we'll investigate that," Blanche noted, adding that the department has already prosecuted several AI-related cases.
Blanche further clarified that while AI is "extraordinarily beneficial" to society, the Department of Justice does not see it as their role to regulate the technology. His comments came amid heightened discussions about AI, a topic also highlighted by President Donald Trump during the week.
