Electric Cars’ Market Share in Europe Surpasses 30% in August

Brussels: Battery-electric vehicles accounted for more than 30% of new car registrations across key European markets in August, according to an industry report released Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, a total of 202,833 new battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered across 16 European markets during the month, marking an annual increase of 54.2%. The data comes from a monthly bulletin prepared by Brussels-based E-Mobility Europe and independent transport research organization New AutoMotive.

BEVs represented 30.5% of all new car registrations in the markets covered, while their estimated share across the EU reached 31.2%. During the January-August period, BEV registrations increased 33.1% year-on-year to 1.67 million, with their market share over the eight-month period standing at 22.5%.

Germany and France led the expansion in Europe's electric vehicle market. France registered 36,159 fully electric cars in August, with their market share reaching 38.3%, and registrations rose 72.2% from a year earlier. Germany recorded 68,980 BEV registrations, giving fully electric cars a market share of 32.5%, with registrations increasing 34.5% year-on-year.

BEVs accounted for 98.7% of new car registrations in Norway, 85.9% in Denmark, 52.3% in Finland, and 48.9% in the Netherlands. Belgium followed with a 46.2% share, while electric cars accounted for 36.1% of registrations in Portugal.

The report covers Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Together, these markets represent approximately 90% of the combined EU and European Free Trade Association car market.
