Ankara: At least three students were killed and eight others injured in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines, according to the country's Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWP). The tragic event unfolded at Banga National High School in Banga town, located in South Cotabato province. According to Anadolu Agency, Banga Mayor Albert Palencia confirmed the deaths of three students and identified the shooter as a ninth-grade student. Initial reports from the DSWD had indicated six fatalities and 17 injuries, but these numbers were later revised to three deaths and eight injuries. Mayor Palencia, citing police sources, noted that the shooter was associated with an online group known as the 'True Crime Community,' which has an interest in violent crimes. GMA Network reported that after targeting fellow students, the shooter turned the gun on himself. In response to the incident, the Banga Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office announced the suspension of classes at all levels throughout Banga. The Department of Education expressed its deep concern over the event and is working closely with school officials, local authorities, and law enforcement agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and to offer necessary assistance. The department emphasized that their immediate priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and school personnel. Additionally, they urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information as the investigation continues. This shooting occurred just a month after a similar incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, also in the southern Philippines, where two students were killed, including the gunman, on August 18. Authorities have not yet identified a motive for the latest shooting.
