Copenhagen: Greenland, Denmark, and the US are poised to sign an agreement next week aimed at bolstering security in the Arctic and North Atlantic region, as announced by the Danish Prime Minister's Office on Friday. The signing is anticipated to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
According to Anadolu Agency, this agreement will need to undergo parliamentary procedures before it can be enacted. The Greenlandic government Chairman, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, expressed optimism about the deal, stating that it will safeguard and enhance security for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States, and the Western alliance. He emphasized that the agreement acknowledges Greenland's interests and role in international cooperation, which will benefit all parties involved.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen shared her satisfaction with the potential agreement, highlighting its importance for bolstering regional security and benefiting NATO and Europe. She affirmed that the agreement respects the Kingdom's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen remarked that the agreement would enhance security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, contributing to NATO and Europe's collective security. Rasmussen suggested that the agreement could replace existing uncertainties with a binding commitment while respecting the Kingdom's key interests.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda praised the forthcoming agreement as a significant move towards enhancing security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. He acknowledged the leadership of US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenlandic Chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen in advancing this agreement. Nauseda emphasized the necessity of stronger transatlantic cooperation in these strategically crucial regions for the security of Europe and the NATO Alliance.
